Laurie Jean McBee

Laurie Jean McBee, 64, of Clark, passed away on August 3, 2022, at her home surrounded by her son, daughter, and granddaughters. Laurie was born on September 22, 1958, in Columbia, MO. Laurie was one of four children to Larry and Laura McBee.

She is survived by her son Patrick Southerland (Angie) and daughter Amanda Southerland-Hargis (Joey), her five grandchildren, her mother Laura McBee, and her siblings Larry E. McBee (Linda), Kevin McBee (Kathleen), and Kerri McBee-Black (Greg), as well as four nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by her father Larry McBee.

Laurie had a long and lustrous career as a hairstylist. After completing her training, Laurie worked for a movie production company, serving as the hairstylist on several movies. After returning to Columbia, Laurie worked for several local salons before opening a salon in downtown Columbia. Laurie’s talent as a hairstylist was quantified by the number of loyal customers she had throughout her career.

In the 90s, she retired from her career as a hairstylist and began a house cleaning business, which she continued until the months before she passed. Again, Laurie developed a loyal customer base due to her detail-oriented style and hardworking nature. Her customers considered her a friend or a family member.

Laurie’s family most remembers her love and loyalty. She was a dedicated mother to her children, always putting them first over herself. As an Aunt, she is best known for spoiling her niece and nephews. As the big sister, Laurie served as a second mother to her siblings.

She loved gardening and taking care of her vast collection of houseplants. She could grow anything and loved finding unique plants. However, she was most content when she was at the beach. She spent many years enjoying Tybee Island, GA and recently took trips to Gulf Shores, AL, with her daughter. The beach was her happy place!

Private services will not be held. The family will host an intimate celebration of life later. In place of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network c/o Bach-Yager Funeral Chapel, 1610 N. Garth Ave., Columbia, MO 65202.
