George and I became friends since 2005. He loved my cooking, he helped my thesis and dissertation, he patiently explained English slang for me, he was always trying to help international students.....

I was speechless when I saw this news.
Since I left Columbia in 2012, I still called him once a while. Last time I called was in 2016. For some reason, I checked his name online and found this news...I wish him rest in peace. My best wishes for him and his family!

George became my dear friend when I came to MU from China to pursue degree. We both love swimming, traveling and culture events. He introduced me to his family and helped me adjust to American life. He is like my American family. I moved to California in 2004, George and I had kept calling each other once in a while. He even came to bay area to visit me a few times. Last Nov I received Julia's email when I was travelling in Europe. I was a little bit worried but I didn't call because I was overwhelmed by my worldwide trip. Now I came back to America and called George like what I used to do. Nobody answered. Then I searched internet and found out about George's passing. I was devastated. I would never forget the road trip we did together, the concert we went together. Julia, if you don't mind, I am planning a trip to Columbia next month to say goodbye.

George was my Ph.D. adviser. During one of my early meetings with him, he told me of his upbringing on a farm during the depression. As with my parents of the same vintage, he respected the value of a dollar. He also believed in hard work and commitment. he was a mentor at a critical stage of my life. I want his family to know that their are farmers and scientists across the country who are indebted to him. Students always remember their teachers.

George was a significant contributor to our cadre of soil scientists, and served the University and its students for all his academic life. There is no telling how many lives he influenced. Such dedication to people and place is rare. His was a life well-lived.

I was a graduate student of Dr. Wagner's in one of his soils courses. He was a wonderful instructor and a genuinely good man.

I grew up knowing George as another father-figure for me. I spent many a day and a few nights at the Wagner house growing up. Some of my best childhood memories took place over at their house under his mentor-ship and discipline!. My deepest condolences to the entire Wagner family. I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss him greatly

My condolences to George's family on his passing. As a faculty member in the soil science program at the University of Missouri since 1999, I often met George either in the office or at the gymnasium where he frequently went swimming. He always provided wise counsel and encouragement and was an inspiration to all of us. He was well known as a pioneer in the study of soil organic matter and he has left a rich legacy that has inspired younger soil scientists who have followed him. I am hoping we can commemorate his contributions in a more formal way in the future. We will miss him!

It is very sad to learn of George's passing and I wish to convey condolences to his family. George became a major force in my life's direction after first meeting him in 1968 as my undergraduate advisor. He personally mentored me not only in academics but also in social responsibility. He never forget me after graduation and entry into the military - he held a graduate position that was ready for me after returning from military, which became the basis for my career in science. He became a friend of my wife and he again helped us when we returned after living experiences away from Columbia. It was very special then to relate to him as a fellow faculty member. We will never forget him as a great mentor and friend and will miss him greatly.
